What Does Crabgrass Look Like?

Of all the weeds, crabgrass is one of the ugliest! With long-legged stems, it reaches out and smothers your healthy grass. If you don’t treat it, soon your lawn can be overcome by this weed! Read on to learn more about this pesky weed, and learn how you can get rid of it on your lawn.

What is Crab Grass

This weed can quickly take over your lawn! It pops up early in spring and sticks around summer and even through the fall. Crabgrass can grow faster than grass, so it can be a real eyesore when you want a thick blanket of healthy, vibrant green grass! Each crabgrass plant drops thousands of seeds, so if you don’t get it under control, it can become a big problem really fast.

This weed definitely sticks out like an ugly sore thumb! The plant itself spreads out wide almost in a circle from the rooting point. Each plant has many legs that stem out from the center. It can grow anywhere, from your flower beds to your lawn, to any crack in your driveway or walkways. It’s a very resilient weed! It can grow tall or stay low, and the shorter types usually escape any harm from a lawnmower.

Types of Crabgrass

There are many different types of crabgrass. The 2 most common in our area are smooth crabgrass and hairy crabgrass. Smooth crabgrass grows about 6 inches tall and has smooth, broad leaves. Hairy crabgrass is much taller and loves clay soil, which is very common in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, both of these thrive all throughout the grass-growing season.
