How To Get Rid of a Lawn Full of Weeds

Have weeds overtaken our lawn? Getting rid of a lawn full of weeds can seem like an overwhelming challenge. But with consistency and patience, it can be done! Check out these tips from the lawn experts at Giroud!

Do a Full Lawn Inspection

Knowing how to beat back the weeds on your lawn starts with understanding what types of weeds you’re dealing with. The most common weeds in our area are Nutsedge, Crabgrass, Dallisgrass, Stiltgrass, Dandelions, Bermuda Grass, and Nimblewill. Each of these weeds spreads quickly if left untreated, and some are worse than others. For example, Nutsedge is a particularly tricky one to tackle because of how it spreads in 4 ways!  Nutsedge Control requires a series of special treatments over a few seasons, so it can take a few years to completely get rid of it.

Be Proactive with Weeds in Early Spring

Starting a lawn care program early in the season is key to getting rid of weeds. That’s because a lot of the common broadleaf weeds, like Crabgrass, can quickly take over your lawn in one season if not treated. These weeds require pre-emergent treatments just as your lawn is starting to wake up in the spring. This granular treatment mixes into the soil and attacks weeds without killing healthy grass.

“Those first two lawn care treatments of the season are THE most important step you can take when it comes to getting rid of weeds,” explains Giroud Lawn Care Manager, Jason Lines. “The Pre-Emergent Crabgrass and weed control attacks weed seeds before they can even establish. Once those seeds establish without the pre-emergent, we’re looking at an infestation that continues throughout the summer.”

Jason explains more about the importance of Pre-Emergent in this video:

Spot Treat Weeds at First Sight

Many common Pennsylvania weeds spread so rapidly that they require spot treating. For example, Bermuda Grass sends out runners underground in search of thin areas and bare spots. Spraying them with herbicide is an effective way to kill the weed, and the earlier the better!

Crowd Out the Weeds

Are you giving weeds an opening to run wild? Weeds love to sprout in bare spots and thin areas! If your grass is thick and healthy, it will crowd out the weeds. Getting on an annual lawn care treatment program with carefully timed fertilizer treatments will strengthen your grass and push out those weeds!
