Experts are still learning about Covid-19, and it seems like new information and guidelines are shared daily! Many are worried about what can spread the illness. There’s been a lot of talk about water droplets, coughing, shared spaces, social distancing, and more; but what about biting insects, like mosquitoes and ticks? Can they spread the virus from human to human? Read on to learn what the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has to say!
Cause for Concern
We know that COVID-19 spreads easily. Social distancing is vital to slowing the transmission of this nasty virus. The CDC has advised us to not touch one another, wear masks, and do everything we can to keep spaces well-ventilated. If the virus can spread through water droplets from our bodies, such as sneezing and coughing, then we can only assume it can be spread through blood as well.
Mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects travel from human to human, animal to animal, biting and sucking blood. Can these bugs carry the virus from person to person?
Mosquitoes and ticks carry a variety of dangerous diseases.
Good News about COVID-19 and Biting Insects
According to all the latest research, it appears that insects are not a cause for concern when it comes to transmitting COVID-19. Last Friday, the CDC tweeted out their FAQ page with this information about if mosquitoes and ticks can transmit Covid-19:
“At this time, CDC has no data to suggest that this new coronavirus or other similar coronaviruses are spread by mosquitoes or ticks. The main way that COVID-19 spreads is from person to person.”
However, the CDC warns, these biting insects are still a danger to humans and animals!
Diseases Spread by Mosquitoes and Ticks
In a recent article published by the CDC, illnesses from mosquitoes, ticks, and even flea bites are all on the rise in the US! With the increase in travel over the last few decades paired with warming climate trends, a variety of insect-borne diseases have made their way into our country. Zika, West Nile, Lyme, Powassan Virus, and more are all causes for concern.
Don’t Let the COVID-19 Pandemic Overshadow Other Dangers
In this time of uncertainty, it’s important that you take action to protect yourself and loved ones as best as you can. While COVID-19 is a scary disease, some of the illnesses transmitted by biting insects are equally frightening! What’s worse is that some of these diseases can leave you with debilitating life-long medical problems. However, there is a lot you can do to keep your property safe from mosquitoes and ticks.
